It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958)

It! The Terror from Beyond Space aka It! The Vampire from Beyond Space (1958) revolves around a rescue mission to Mars that finds the sole survivor from the previous Earth expedition. The survivor, the expedition's former commander, claims his crew were hunted to death, one-by-one, by a hostile Martian life form. The rescue ship's captain doesn't believe him, thinking they were killed for their provisions so the commander could survive.  He orders the commander confined to quarters as the rescue ship launches for Earth. The same hostile Martian creature, now on board, begins another killing spree.

  1. I`ve just realised that there are 2 different types of suits in this film, the first has 4 pleats on the elbow and knee joints and 3 on the neck and looks to be the same as the ones in Cat women of the moon/Abbot and costello and several other films, the 2nd suit has 2 pleats on the neck and joints and looks to be the same one that was in King Dinosaur.Just how many of these Destination Moon type suits are there?

    1. I've a notion that as well as the ones used in Destination, there were others made for public appearances to promote the film. I've got some images I will dig out. the number of rings may well be the best way to determine which were which. It also occurs that this type of suit became the consensus version of what a space suit should look like and therefor I suspect in was copied a number of times. - An interesting line of investigation, me thinks

  2. Directed by the same guy who put Spock in a beard.

I quite like it, although the cheapness works against it. An odd plot point states that they flew to Mars with existing technology - nothing had to be specially built to fly to Mars. Huh. There's also a very dubious scene with hand grenades.

But I want to see a film where a sole survivor is picked up, claims the rest of the crew was killed by a mysterious monster, and ultimately we find horrifying evidence that he killed the rest of his crew. I always thought that was the unspoken line when Ripley was debriefed by corporate bigwigs in Aliens.

  3. It is fascinating to note that this film shares a writer and director with the film it was released with... And that film is "The Curse of the Faceless Man". The fascinating thing is that this one is quite good, (monster suit and occasional stupidity aside), while "Faceless Man" has little good to be said for it... Dull, dull, and how amazing that it was only about 65 minutes, cuz it feels longer.
