Doctor Who: The Wheel in Space (1968) - A Gallery

We've been here before of course but that was before I was pointed in the direction of episode 6, one of the two surviving episodes of this second Doctor and the Cybermen, six part story from 1968.  And the reason to explore episode 6 in greater detail is that, as you will see, it reveals that the BBC actual used three Windak suits and not just two as originally blogged.  It is my belief that these were the same suits as featured the film; First Men in the Moon in 1964, and again in Doctor Who: The Tenth Planet, the first Doctor's last story and the Cyberman's first, in 1966.  I would make a fairly safe bet that between their appearance here in The  Wheel in Space and then guesting in Star Wars IV in 1977, they did feature in other sci-fi shows and films as well.  As of yet I've no idea what that might be but if anyone has caught a glimpse in an episode of Out of the Unknown or Doom Watch, etc, I would love to hear about it. Until then enjoy the images.

Thanks to Philip Ayres for telling me where to find these.  You are a star, sir.

  1. Hi, just a question:
have You took those pictures from a running video? I was searching the footage but seems that everything related to "The Wheel in Space" is missing.
I'm also very interested to know the exact name of the Tylor pressure helmet used here.

    Thanks,
    Alberto

    1. Hi Alberto
Screen grabs from episode 6 if I remember rightly. Two episodes remain both featured on the DVD; Doctor Who Lost in Time. Not sure of the helmet name off the top of my head but if I find it I'll post it back here in a few days. Thanks for the comments and the questions

  2. Hey Steve! I was just referred to this great Blog from a fellow on the RPF. I am very interested in the Windak's suits as well as I built what many people think is one of the best Bossk costumes around, and I actually used what is essentially the U.S. version of the Windak for my suit. When I first wore it at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando 10 years ago, several people were sure I was wearing the actual suit used in the films! You can see my suit on the RPF in my thread, "There's a new Bossk in town" and by RPF name is Bossk as well. One of the images in this thread finally shows a feature which has alluded me for the decade I have been portraying Bossk, which is a good view of the curiously "baggy prosterior" of at least the older, yellow version of the suit. It looks like this was the entry point to get into the suit, and in the one image it looks like it wasn't zipped up which made it look even baggier! The early USAF version has a similar, heavy rubberized zipper, but across the chest, and this area is always concealed by the white vest. I am frankly quite amazed how rare these suits seem to be, and wonder what happened to the ones bought by the British costume warehouse that rented them to these film productions. Quite coincidentally, my earliest memory of a science fiction movie, was seeing First Men in the Moon in a movie theater as a 9 year old child!
