The Young Astronauts (1986)

I was flicking through an old Micronauts comic this morning - as you do - and stumbled accros this advert.
That's one for the blog I thought.  Something I hadn't previously been aware of and worth a little online research later.  Well that image above is about all that remains of the show it seems.

Follow the link here;

for an explanation of how it fell into obscurity.

  1. Wow! Blast from the past! I was 10 when comics I collected at the time (DC's Star Trek)teased this new series. Given the time, I never knew what happened to this series until the internet. While Young Astronauts would never air, we would get STARCOM: The US Space Force and the space-set Tom Swift books, like "The City in the Stars". Some great spacesuit art there, mate.
    Nice catch!

    1. Yep. I caught a glimpse of StarCom when looking this up. Definitely one for a future post.

  2. Wow, I vaguely recall the ads for this.

    Gotta wonder why it was lost. Usually in a case like this, they'd just delay the release by a few months.

    1. If it was a Marvel productions then that could be the reason. They were close to bankruptcy a few times back in the day and changes of contracts/owners would make ownership of product difficult to prove. Might have got literally shelved as part of some legal ownership thing. My best guess

    2. That would make sense. I also imagine that if, say, one of the astronauts who died was a major character there'd be no way to use it. Still, even there, it's hard to imagine it would be impossible to edit around that.

      One minor point: when I was of an age to see these "next season" comic books ads, I noticed that the art rarely reflected the look of the show. I don't know why that is, but there's a good chance that image is some pre-production art that wouldn't have been used.

  3. I`m a little surprised that someone didnt video the one episode that was supposedly screened as video recorders were pretty common by then,interestingly while looking for more info on this I stumbled across this from another 80s icon,one for a future post perhaps?

  4. I`ve just remembered another one and its one that I watched,its Space Cadets and it was a "reality" tv show that had a group of people thinking and even believing that they were going on a real orbital space flight,naturally the whole thing was a clever hoax but the participants didnt know that,it features our old mate the gsh-6a,but then with this gullible lot you probably could`ve given them a crash helmet with a vacuum cleaner hose attached and they would`ve bought it,it actually was a rather clever premise/hoax and I did rather like it and its premise is rather unique,I definitely think it deserves a post.

    1. Thanks Tim. I had blanked that from my mind. Even being a big Johnny Vaughan fan wasn't enough to keep me watching that past the start. Not quite sure why it put my back up but it did. However it does get a post and I appreciate you remembering it because I wouldn't have got to it on my own. Well done Sir
