Nebo Zovyot (The Sky is Calling) is a Russian film from 1960. Or you may know it as Battle Beyond the Sun which is the US, 1962 version of the film which was acquired by Roger Corman with a westernised dub and edit by the young Francis Ford Coppola.

I like your blog. It is focused. Please carry on.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. I will. Still lots more in the files.
DeleteLots of activity of late! And it is grand to see some more Soviet science fiction goodies.
ReplyDeleteYeah I had time to prep a few posts while blogger was looking for its picture browsing button
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've read the original "unCormanized" version of this film is very good...a serious drama with no cheesy monsters (Corman filmed and added that slow, lumbering battle between stylized male and female genitalia creatures. Seriously, watch BBTS and just look at those things!) I found a download of Nobo Zovyot online (no subtitles, but I'll muddle through). I'll give it a look and report back!
ReplyDeleteGotta say... The 'unCormanized" version is better, but quite slow and not terribly involving. This is no huge surprise, based on other Soviet SF films. Even "To the Stars By Hard Ways" is pretty dull even if it is must-viewing for fans of SF film. The best thing about "Nebo Zovyot" is that it actually is a space exploration film and not a clumsy adventure film with space helmets instead of pith helmets or a monster movie. Not that space adventures and monster movies are a bad thing in themselves...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the review and thoughts, keep them coming
