Soldier (1998)

These suits went on to appear in Firefly, which is not half as interesting as the fact that the writer of Soldier considers it to be set in the same universe as Blade Runner.

  1. Back when I started my own blog, and was writing a Blade Runner fan-fic book, I dug around Dallas for Soldier on DVD...when to four stores, and only found a very basic DVD. Very disappointing movie, but a cool scene with spacesuit combat! Kurt Russell was very good in this film as Todd...shame no one saw it

    1. Kurt's made some good films and bad but he's always watchable in all of them. I'm not sure how I feel about Soldier. Next time its on, I'm going to think Blade Runner thoughts and make a decision

  2. I really liked this flick, I see a contemporary Japanese influence in the style of the narrative and script, there's some Phillip K. Dick in there too,, "Fear" is the answer Todd grunts, when queried about how he feels, KIrt Russell hits the mark juat about flawlessly and has some brilliant support from the rest of the cast, Sean Pertwee and the hot chick who plays his wife (don't know her name). We have Garry Busey and Jason Isaacs too. I get the feeling Isaacs was smarting from the criticism of his Patriot role because he's hampered with an American persona which doesn't suit him, I'd much rather he was his smarmy English git. It's interesting that some props found a new home in Firefly because the script shares some themes and preoccupations with that series. They both take liberties with the evil corporate entity stereotype and push into slightly dangerous territory, they also have a communities depicted living, or trying to live, outside the purview of the state.

  3. One of the issues, for me, was the over-the-top acting done by the film's "villains". After all, Paul W.S. Anderson directed it. I've always wanted a film set on the off-world colones and the wars fought over them. To see this vision, I had to write the book because SOLDIER disappointed me so much.
