He wrote, directed and starred in 3 episodes of Columbo over the years and won Emmys for all three, I believe. They're typically dense and convoluted McGoohanesque plots, too. He was in lots of other stuff--the warden in Escape from Alcatraz, the king in Braveheart and the elder phantom in The Phantom to name but three.
Yes, Columbo is one of those shows that just gets better the more you watch. McGoohan and Peter Falk were close friends--the former even wrote the foreword to the latter's very entertaining autobiography.
It's a very young Patrick McGoohan...one of my favorite actors!

ReplyDeleteAlcatraz I should have remembered but not seen the other two yet. Now Columbo is a joy so I will keep my eye out for repeats of the McGoohan ones.
