Julia - Swing Low, Sweet Charity (1971)

   Julia was an American TV sitcom that aired from September 17, 1968, to March 23, 1971. It starred actress and singer Diahann Carroll, and ran for 86 episodes on NBC.  These images are from series 3, episode 23 called “Swing Low, Sweet Charity” and feature the original Lost In Space spacesuits, complete and unaltered as best as I can tell.

   I have to confess that I knew nothing about this episode, or even this show until I was directed to it by long time blog fan Tim Armstrong. Although weirdly, the theme music is very familiar so whether it did air in the UK for a period remains to be discovered.  Either way it is a very cool, obscure find of the kind that we like here.

   And now I’ve posted this, I’ll see if I can keep the momentum going and post some more. It’s not like those spacesuits have gone away!

Lost In Space - S3 E8 - Flight into the Future (1967)

We've looked at Lost in Space before, both the original series Robinsons' spacesuits as well as the movie and Netflix reboots.

For this post though we are returning to a specific episode of the original run - season three's Flight into the Future, the eighth episode that first aired in 1967.  This story features two Destination Moon style suits which may even be the originals or at least a very accurate reproduction.

What's particularly interesting about this spacesuit though is that's its an ensemble of very mixed origins because while the suit may be from 1950, the helmets are from 1966's Way...Way Out.  They have been modified to reflect the 50's aesthetic but that actually appears to have been done for an earlier Irwin Allen production; episode two of  The Time Tunnel.  There is lots more to be said about this but at the risk of repeating myself its perhaps best to follow the link and read all about here:

Lost In Space (2019)

Happy Christmas and all that stuff...

I was searching the Netflix for a little late night Christmas day horror and stumbled over Lost in Space Series 2.  Quick change of plan then followed and I've just treated myself to the first two episodes.

I will be back to blog those lovely space suits again but not until I've watched the whole series as I fear I'll stumble over spoilers.

Until then, here is the promo art and if you haven't watched this reboot I suggest you do, its really rather good in my opinion.  There are enough nods to the original show but it really is its own thing.

Lost in Space (2018) - A Gallery

One of the reasons I've not posted so much over the Christmas month was that we finally got Netflix here at Say Hello Spaceman Towers and consequentially I've been a little busy catching up with all the new TV shows in the evening (as well as everything else you cram into life).  And one of the first shows I went for was the LIS reboot.  I quite like the original series from a nostalgic point of view, the 1998 movies kind of sucks but this new version is pretty bloody amazing.  An intriguing and beautifully structured show that has some fine performances, lovely designs and excellent direction.  Bring on series 2, already

No spacesuits in this pic but I just have to say before I go, that I love that robot and the relationship with Will.  Highly recommended show.

Lost In Space (2018)

It's reboot time once more and why not.

Kids Incorporated. (1984) ....where have I seen those space helmets before?

I previously blogged about this; Kids Incorporated - NASA Space Week (1984)

Which featured a Men into Space helmet & suit and four other unknown space helmets.  I suggested at the time that such items were too expensive for such a cheap show to manufacture themselves, therefore they would have been from somewhere else.  Well the mystery was solved quite quickly when blog followers; John Nowak came up with the answer, and the ever reliable Tim Armstrong gave his agreement.  So, until such times as we track down more of them, I present to you the first recycling of the 1965 to 1968 Lost in Space, Jupiter 2 space helmets.

1968 to 1984 is a lot of years so where else did they pop up?

Two were sold at auction in new colours so they've definitely been somewhere else in between times.  Lets go track them down and report back here with our findings.

Say; Hello Spaceman - 4 Year Anniversary

The 1st of December will mark Say; Hello Spaceman's 4th Anniversary and its interesting to remind my self of what that particular year was like.

For a number of different reasons 2010 was a fairly wearing time and starting this blog was my way of keeping sane whilst battling through something of a shit-storm of troubles.  None of it was anybody fault, none of it could have been avoided and none of it was down to bad luck so much as just bad timing. Stuff just happened.  Then more stuff happened and then some more stuff happened on top of that.

But you keep on going because what else can you do.  And of course things got better and then things got a lot better and now days life is far more smooth than its crunchy.  And far more fun.

I do this little blog for different reasons now.  After 4 years I think I've built something quite interesting.  I think this blog not only shows us who we used to be but fairly consistently, decade after decade, shows us who we would like to become.  The future beckons and there's something very positive about our unwavering desire to be a part of it.
