Deep Space Wombles (1998)

The Wombles in space, well who would have thought it!

I was raised on The Wombles, back in the early 1970s which looked pretty much like this but with all the characters voiced by the great Bernard Cribbins.  Consequently, watching bits of this episode online, with lots of new Wombles and lots of different actors doing the voices, well it all seemed a bit off and not quite right! There's cars, helicopters and rocket ships...its all so "modern!"

Still who am I to deny another generation the pleasure of those furry little litter pickers..... and I do enjoy a really obscure find for this blog.

...by the way, they don't really get into space, they just think they do.  A bit of a spoiler there but it makes me feel better to know The Clangers remain safe from discovery.

Lexx - Lyekka (1998)

Series 2 episode 03 of one of the maddest Sci-fi shows ever.  Lexx could be wonderful and strange and sexy and funny but some times there wasn't enough plot or money to keep the story going all the way to the end of the episode.  Should have been bigger and better known but then it should have just been better.

The plant-based organism called Lyekka arrives on the Lexx and uses Stanley's dream image of a high school sweetheart to take form. At the same time, 3 astronauts from the planet Potatohoe run into the Lexx. Lyekka begins to eat them one at a time, allowing them to live out their wildest fantasies before being fully consumed.  And if that sounds odd you don't know the half of it.

The Outer Limits - The Joining (1998)

From the fourth Series of The Outer Limits reboot, Episode 13 is called The Joining and tells a tale about the survivor of a crashed transport ship who returns home, but not unscathed, as his body now craves radiation and is sprouting new limbs.

These suits went on to appear in Firefly, which is not half as interesting as the fact that the writer of Soldier considers it to be set in the same universe as Blade Runner.

Bee Gees - Alone (1998)

Very, very indifferent to everything the Bee Gees ever did so I'm not at all surprised I didn't know about this video. (Cheers Tim)  It's another Barabarella parody however, unlike the original film and the Kylie version, this manages to remain dull while failing to give even a nod in the general direction of the erotic.

It might be the fact that, you can't really see anything through the video colour bleed or it's the constant return edit back to three bearded men harmonising in a padded cell but its a big bucket of cold water of a video.

That's a sort of spacesuit by the way.

Bring me the head of the art director.

Armageddon (1998) Gallery

I think this is a really bad film.  I wouldn't swear to it because I've blocked all memory of having seen it from my mind.  I can prove this by the fact I was half way through doing this blog when I realised I had already blogged about it once already.  I've just added the word; Gallery, to the title and now we're good to go again.  Look at the pretty space suits but do not be tempted to watch the film.

Armageddon (1998)

Head's Up!  Its; Armageddon

This film came out only a couple of months after Deep Impact, another very similar film about a giant asteroid on a collision course with the Earth.  This one has a rather large list of acting talents and in excess of 160 impossible things lurking within its plot as identified by NASA employees who use the film as part of their Management Training Program.

Me?  well I just think its a load of old toffee that's far too busy trying to make a hero out of Mr American Everyman that it forgot to simply engage the audience.  Lets just not talk about it any more and look at the spacesuits instead.

They're sort of interesting although they remind me too much of the space suits used in Event Horizon the year before.  I've notion they were made by the same company but I'll check that out when I blog on that far superior film.
