Lost In Space - S3 E8 - Flight into the Future (1967)

We've looked at Lost in Space before, both the original series Robinsons' spacesuits as well as the movie and Netflix reboots.

For this post though we are returning to a specific episode of the original run - season three's Flight into the Future, the eighth episode that first aired in 1967.  This story features two Destination Moon style suits which may even be the originals or at least a very accurate reproduction.

What's particularly interesting about this spacesuit though is that's its an ensemble of very mixed origins because while the suit may be from 1950, the helmets are from 1966's Way...Way Out.  They have been modified to reflect the 50's aesthetic but that actually appears to have been done for an earlier Irwin Allen production; episode two of  The Time Tunnel.  There is lots more to be said about this but at the risk of repeating myself its perhaps best to follow the link and read all about here:

Its been suggested that this is the same space helmet as one featured in You Only Live Twice and on study I would have to agree.  Its also the same year as that James Bond film and given the smart dressed chap and the girl I'm now wonder if this whole advert is trying to capture the Bond thing, officially or not.  Thanks "Unknown" for spotting that

'How it Works' The Rocket - Ladybird books (1967)

Another Ladybird Book showing us what the future was going to look like just a few years before it happened for real. Beautiful art by B. H. Robinson from this 1967 book.

Ladybird was a very important part of British culture, and I doubt there was a kid growing up through the 60's and 70's that didn't own a few or at least borrowed them from the library to do some homework for school.  I've recently treated myself to a copy of the above from the local Oxfam store and added to it with the Television one from the same 'How it Works' series.  The technology for both has moved on a bit since then but I'm not sure the quality of the illustrations can be bettered.

 

And we all trusted what Ladybird showed us so if they said we would by circling round the moon for fun then I for one believed them.  Of course I used to think I would be the kid up front but I realise now that I'm to be the dad at the back.

Somethings just take a little longer to come true

Mission Stardust - Lobby Cards (1967)

Mission Stardust, AKA  ...4...3...2...1...Morte in Italy, AKA Perry Rhodan – SOS aus dem Weltall in Germany, AKA Órbita Mortal in Spain is a 1967 Italian movie based on the Perry Rhodan universe.

I've never had the pleasure although it is supposed to be quite bad.  Still I feel strangely drawn by that 60's Italian aesthetic.

Stumbled across this episode as a re-run on the TV this evening. Should have thought to look, really.  A show like The Invaders was bound to have at least one spacesuit appearance, and what a suit it is!  If you are not familiar with it or this blog then follow the "Way Out Spacesuit" label below to marvel at all the place these suits end up.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Journey with Fear" (1967)

Journey with Fear is the 4th episode from the 4th season of the long running American TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. (1964 to 1968), an underwater adventure series not averse to dealing with an outer space plot or two. 

Aliens snatch a manned space probe launched from Seaview with Chip Morton aboard, and transport it at the speed of light to their observation post on the rocky, unstable surface of Venus

 

 

 

Here you will notice the very same spacesuits as first seen in Way... Way Out (1966) which then went on to feature in various other films and a variety of other TV shows.  Follow the Way Out Spacesuit label below to be truly amazed at where this suit winds up.

Wahan Ke Log (1967)

Wonderfully obscure find directed to me by blog-follower Tim Armstrong. These are images from Wahan Ke Log, an Indian Sci-fi film from 1967.  It appears to be available to view on the internet in the usual places.

 

IMDB has this to say; "Armed with laser guns, three-fingered virtually invincible Martians collude with gangsters to invade Earth" which sound like a good enough plot to me.

Pamela Austin in The Perils of Pauline.  This is a little loved movie constructed from the first few episodes of a failed TV series.

X from Outer Space (1967)

X from Outer Space is a 1967 kaiju film released by the Japanese film studio Shochiku. It was the first of its kind released by Shochiku, and was one of the many giant monster films made during the late '60s "monster boom" in Japan.

...and it had spacemen in it too.
