X from Outer Space is a 1967 kaiju film released by the Japanese film studio Shochiku. It was the first of its kind released by Shochiku, and was one of the many giant monster films made during the late '60s "monster boom" in Japan.
...and it had spacemen in it too.

ReplyDeleteThis film recently aired on Turner Classic Movies. I can't believe I never noticed this before. These are the same helmets that appear in The Green Slime. I believe the visors are darker on the helmets that are worn in The Green Slime. This is interesting, because we're talking about two different studios. Obviously there was some friendly sharing between Toei and Shochiku.
ReplyDeleteSharing or buying from the same military air force supplier? Another one to investigate further I think
Deletecheers
This same helmet also shows up in episode #2 of a 1967 japanese tv show called Lightspeed Esper.
DeleteThe helmet with its distinctive knob on the rear right side[used for adjusting the fitting of the internal webbing] looks to be based on a USAF helmet made by the Dave Clark Company. This was made in 2 versions, the full pressure HGK-13 and the partial pressure HGU-8,I suspect this one is possibly based on the HGU-8 as it also had its hoses connected on the right hand front side of the helmet rather than the rear as the HGK-13 did.
Heres the HGU-8 helmet
