Solaris (1972)

I've already blogged Solaris twice now; the 1968 Russian television two parter and the 2002 Steven Soderbergh (re-remake).  I never thought to do the 1972 Tarkovsky version because as memory served, there were no spacesuits in it.

... which actually turned out to be nonsense as you can all see in the picture above. No?

Any way I was happy in my misremembering right up until Blog-follower Tim mentioned a certain picture in a certain book he had been looking at.  Somewhat spookily I instantly new which old book and the very page and picture he was describing because I had owned a copy since 1978 and actually had it on the desk in front of me, having recently been blogging about it over in Strange England. (more of which below) however here is the reveal...

  

Yes it was in the closet all along!

 

Now I did watch Solaris, back in the late 80's but I fancy it may have been on a Friday night when I was slightly drunk and sleepy so if the suit comes off the hanger and gets worn I don't remember it.  Those with a fresher memory may wish to enlighten me in the comments below.

Top of the Heap (1972)

 

 Looks like the suit that first(?) appeared in Earth II before coming here to this.

Afterwards it seemed to go to The Six million Dollar Man and was used in a number of episodes up to 1977.  My feeling is that there will be more appearances.

I don't do adverts as a rule however being as the last time I posted about Kadoyng I mentioned that the BFI were dipping into the CFF back catalogue and hopped they would include this film in a future release, it seems churlish not to inform you all that they now have done just that.

Doomsday Machine (1972)

Production of Doomsday Machine began in 1967 but stopped before it could be completed.  The rights to the film were finally purchased and completed in 1972; without the original cast or sets.

Excessive use of stock footage includes real but badly degraded NASA rocket footage, special effects shots from The Wizard of Mars (1965), Gorath (1962) and other disparate sources.  All of  which leads to numerous continuity errors and help to make it a favourite with fans of bad cinema.

Silent Running (1972)

This is a bit of a classic film that I used to enjoy as a kid when it first made it's way on to British TV.  Upon watching it again recently, very much as an adult now, it remained every bit as good as I remember.

It has in it three memorably fantastic robots and something of a bleak ending.  It also has a very small and far away spacesuit sequence that is almost totally forgettable.  These are the best images I can find.

If you've never seen this one then go track it down.

Eolomea (1972)

Eolomea is an East German film from 1972.  I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of seeing this but these images and the IMDB write up has bumped it fairly high on my must watch to list.

The film was shot in colour but the following black and white images really show of those spacesuits.

The 1972 Penguin edition of this Science fiction collection with cover art by David Pelham.  I'm not sure that I like it but it is striking design none the less.

Strange Adventures #238 from October 1972.  Look!  little tiny spacemen.  Green boots, red trousers and a white top?  There's no excuse for that, whatever your size.

Kadoyng (1972)

Leo Maguire writes and stars in this Children’s Film Foundation film about an alien who befriends a group of kids and helps them to stop a motorway from being built through their village by using his strange alien powers. Sound like good clean family fun to me!

As you can see; this alien shops at the same outfitters as those in Gerry Anderson’s UFO series although his behaviour would suggest that he’s a much nicer chap and far less likely to steal your internal organs.
