Tornado #19 (1979)

Tornado was a weekly British anthology comic from 1979 which lasted for just 22 issues.  This is the obligatory Spacemen cover from issue 19 especially for those post Star Wars sci-fi hungry kids.

While I like the overall composition, the suits themselves are a bit old fashioned for the time.  I've no idea who the cover artist was but as ever I'll update this post if anyone out there wants to throw a name at me.

Massimo Belardinelli has been suggested by DeadSpiderEye in the comments below which sounds good enough to me as a quick google image search shows work of comparative style and quality.  As ever many thanks for all feedback that makes the blog better and more accurate

Heavy Metal (1981)

Heavy Metal was an animated anthology science fiction and fantasy film based on the long running magazine of the same name and content.

Its a mixed bag of stories and animation styles with these images coming from the films opening sequence.  Spaceman drives car from orbiting space shuttle to  earth - trippy!

Defying Gravity (2009)

Defying Gravity was set in the year 2052 and followed the lives of 8 astronauts on a six year mission through the solar system.  Which is interesting enough as a premise until you find out the show was pitched to the networks as Grey's Anatomy in space and that their mission was being monitored from Earth via a real time communications.  The later allowing the shows makers to give it a cheap to produce mockumentry feel as we follow the ongoing lives and relationships of the 4 men and 4 women crew.  Sound dreadful doesn't it!  Which is perhaps why it ran for just 13 episodes before being cancelled.

The Green Slime (1969)

The Green Slime was released in May of 1969 and was a joint venture filmed in Japan with a big cast of American B-movie stars and a B-movie plot.

 

A giant asteroid on collision with Earth, a team of astronauts is sent from the nearby Gamma 3 space station to plant explosives and blow it up.  Although the mission is successful, they unwittingly return to the space station contaminated with an alien goo which then mutates into deadly full sized space aliens.  One eyed, tentacled and murderous, a battle for survival soon commences in lovely over saturated 60’s Technicolor.

 

Released at the very end of the previous year, the Japanese edit was known as Gamma 3: Operation Outer Space.
