Somthing for the Weekend - Barbarella (1968)

Welcome to 2019.  Its been a while since I posted although I've carried on replying to the various comments that have appeared over the last couple of months - thanks and keep them coming.

Anyway I'll try and pick up the pace a bit for this newest of years so lets start with something almost only half a spacesuit but full on sexy..... if Jane Fonda is your kind of thing...and why wouldn't she be!

What follows are some very nice images for just one of the outfits featured in the 1968 sci-fi classic Barbarella but after that I strongly recommend that you follow the link below to view the rest of her intergalactic wardrobe.  Its a fascinating collection of images and contains quite a few I hadn't seen before.

Something for the Weekend #19

Kate Bush is a creature of such rare beauty and talent that were I to have dedicated this entire blog to her instead of spacesuits, even after all these years, we would still not have done justice to her artistry and originality...

This is an image of Kate from her 1982 video for The Dreaming, the title track from her 4th studio album.  I present it here as something of a teaser for what's to come.  Yes that may well mean more pictures of Kate Bush.  But it will also include David Bowie, Moon Zero Two, Alien and even a Cyberman or two. Who would have thunk it?

Regulars may know I'm a bit of a Moon Zero Two fan so consequently I'm very excited to present what's a relatively rare image.  Its a publicity still in which the moon's version of Pan's People (ask your mum and dad) gather around our hero and his sidekick because...well because quite frankly; sex sells.

Well hello there!

 

Here is the lovely Linda Lusardi from back in the day when she was a page 3 girl in The Sun newspaper.  This is a cropped version of the full image because we're meant to be admiring the equally lovely space-wear and saving the internet from its self, one pair of tits at a time.

 

Linda is sporting one of the space helmets from Superman II...

Which as we've previously established was originally made for Moon Zero Two over a decade earlier.

 

Now I've a fairly good idea where this one ended up, which is here....

Images from a music video.  Thank you Tim for the pointer.  It's a lovely gift; Kylie in a Spacesuit/Kylie getting out of a spacesuit.- Nice.

 

A little ashamed to say I was unaware of this video.  Which is the kind of crime they kick you out of the Men's Club for.  It's clearly inspired by the Barbarella opening sequence but in a good way that just makes you wish they would make more Barbarella films

All kinds of naked now and just about to grab a nice big space blanket when she spots one last tenacious voyeur (or did she know he was there all the time, the little minx)

..and shuts him out before going to bed.

Unfortunately it didn't pan out too well for Lieutenant Stewart and she didn't even make it out of bed let alone off the ship.

Something for the Weekend 10

Ok, so I know it's not actually the weekend any more but it was only ever an expression in the first place and what I've found here is a little bit rare and unusual and therefore couldn't possibly wait a moment longer.  Beautiful is it not?

That there image of a Spacemaid (half spacesuit half woman) is, unless I'm very much mistaken, one; Amber Dean Smith. Penthouse Pet of the Year 1966 ...for whatever that's worth in these more enlightened times!

Of course she's posing on the set of Moon Zero Two, the Hammer space western from 1969.  And why wouldn't she be, she was after all in the film as one of J.J. Hubbard's girls, along with Simone Silvera.  Here's the two of them together in an actual image from the movie.

Well Amber and Simone, being models and not actresses procured some further work on and around the set of the film doing photo shoots for any number of products in just about every available outfit, including both versions of the spacesuits.

Now I think that's all kinds of interesting from a commercial point of view as well as simply being rather lovely to look at.  Of course if you want to see more of what they got up to on set after hours you'll have to go off and search the interweb to find the other stills for yourself.  As you'll be well aware, this blog is all about the cultural history of the spacesuit and not about anything else.

This might be considered strange behaviour but he was her husband at the time so that makes it all perfectly acceptable.  This is the shot he was going for I imagine....

...which makes you wonder if he was there all the time, just below frame, gently breathing the aroma of secondary croissant up her helmet in order to inspire the dreamy faraway look he was after.  What a star.

This is Joan Shawlee's publicity/glamour shot for Conquest of Space from 1955 but amusingly it just reminds me of this scene from Alien....

And now I'm imagining Conquest is a much better film than I know it to be.
