Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979)

Images from the feature length first episode of the 1979 TV movie Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Interestingly, for 37 odd episodes, I don't recall a lot of space suit action.

This is Buck wearing the suit they found him in although it appears to lack a space helmet.  Even more interesting is the fact that the suits is on loan from the prop store and has a long history through film and TV, starting in (1959) Men into Space and continuing all the way to Laverne and Shirley (1982) and possibly beyond.  Follow the "Men into Space Helmets" thread to view the history of its appearances in company with a particular space helmet.

Star Fleet (1982)

Star Fleet is the UK name for the English dubbed version of Japan's X-Bomber.  It was a sort of Manga, Star Wars, Gerry Anderson type of puppet show.  There were 25 episodes and it was all rather entertaining and just about as sci-fi as you can get.

Unidentified Flying Oddball (1979)

The Spaceman and King Arthur...

Or... Unidentified Flying Oddball.  Same film, different titles. It's based on Mark Twain's book;  A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court  or  A Yankee in King Arthur's Court as it was originally known.  Confusing or what!  I've never read the book but I have seen the film, a very long time ago.  I think it was entertaining enough for the time although it wasn't Star Wars so it probably had a lot to live up to and was never going to manage it.  Interestingly, all these years later, I know which one I'd sit down to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

El Planeta de las mujeres invasoras (1967)

Aka; Planet of the Female Invaders.  This film has the same director as Gigantes Planetarios, was made the same year and also featuring the same helmet. That being the increasingly ubiquitous Men into Space helmet.

Gigantes Planetarios (1967)

Aka Planetary Giants. And made in Mexico, apparently.  Beyond that I know not of this film.  I've never seen it, not even in my distant youth.  It was brought to my attention by blog follower; Nikk Niknod who sighted it as an example of one of those films that features the Men into Space helmets.  Thanks Nikk, spot on I'd say.  If anyone would like to add a little review of the film to the comments below I would be chuffed and we'd all be a little wiser.

 

On a slightly related note, Nikk also suggests another appearance of these helmets in an episode of Sea Hunt, a TV show from 1961 for which I also remain equally ignorant.  It either didn't make it across the pond or else we hadn't invented television in England back then.  Not being even a twinkle in me pater's optics at the time I shall rely on others to confirm any details relating to this.  And if you can point me towards a good image from said episode. (Astronetts / Aquanetts ?) I'll post it up for all to see.

John Schoenherr - Various Works

This post is by way of a thank you to Ian Schoenherr who posted a comment to this blog identifying his father; John Schoenherr as the probable cover artist of Dell's Space Man #3.

 

I do this blog mainly just for the fun of it but if it allows us to identify and credit artists to their work then we've performed something of a service too.
