Prometheus (2012)

Just a bit of a teaser gallery really because until the film is out and on general release there's not too much I can say except I'm quite excited about seeing this.
And the spacesuits look very cool.

Superman II and the Moon Zero 2 connection.

There it is.
It took me a moment to spot this and its not something that I've ever read documented anywhere else but that there space helmet from Superman II, as worn by the cosmonaut killed by Zod, appears to be one of the seven created a decade earlier for the Hammer sci-fi  movie Moon Zero 2.

As previous blogs have revealed, these helmets have had quite a career, often in the company of Gerry Anderson's UFO helmets, and though they had a lot of activity in the early 70's...
and one as yet unblogged appearance in 1975, the Superman guest-spot seems to be the latest thus far.  Don't you just know there's more out there waiting to be rediscovered.

Earth II (1971)

Pilot for a TV series that never happened, I would imagine for the simple reason that it's all a bit boring.
Set slightly in the future (of when it was made) Earth II is a space station built for scientific research purposes.  Now bring into close proximity a nuclear bomb sent up by the Chinese, orbiting close enough to Earth II to destroy it and close enough to the Earth to start World War III if it goes off.
If only there were some handy scientist near by who could diffuse the situation aka bomb

Superman II (1980)

One of the things I like about doing this blog, apart from the fact that it's never ending, is that every now and then I'll surprise myself by finding something that's much more interesting than I remember it being.
Superman II is one of those examples.  Not the film it's self you understand, although it's the only one in the franchise that I've got any time for, but for the fact that the scene on the moon yielded much more Spaceman goodness than I initially thought it was going to.  And quite possibly something really special which I'm going to save for a separate post of it's own.
Anyway, three Kryptonian supervillians who are on their way to Earth to give Superman a bloody good kicking, stop off for a bit of a warm up murderous killing spree on the moon.  There they find three astronauts who they make very short work of.
There are a mixture of different suits designs used, primarily it seems to distinguish the Russian cosmonaut from the American astronauts but it all adds to making it visually more interesting.
And here's the rest of the pictures starting with Ursa and the American Spaceman.

And now Zod and the Russian

Fantastic stuff and we'll be back this way for a closer look at something you eagle-eyed blog followers may have already noticed in the pictures above

Tornado #19 (1979)

Tornado was a weekly British anthology comic from 1979 which lasted for just 22 issues.  This is the obligatory Spacemen cover from issue 19 especially for those post Star Wars sci-fi hungry kids.

And here's a close up.
While I like the overall composition, the suits themselves are a bit old fashioned for the time.  I've no idea who the cover artist was but as ever I'll update this post if anyone out there wants to throw a name at me.

Massimo Belardinelli has been suggested by DeadSpiderEye in the comments below which sounds good enough to me as a quick google image search shows work of comparative style and quality.  As ever many thanks for all feedback that makes the blog better and more accurate

Heavy Metal (1981)

Heavy Metal was an animated anthology science fiction and fantasy film based on the long running magazine of the same name and content.
Its a mixed bag of stories and animation styles with these images coming from the films opening sequence.  Spaceman drives car from orbiting space shuttle to  earth - trippy!

Defying Gravity (2009)

Defying Gravity was set in the year 2052 and followed the lives of 8 astronauts on a six year mission through the solar system.  Which is interesting enough as a premise until you find out the show was pitched to the networks as Grey's Anatomy in space and that their mission was being monitored from Earth via a real time communications.  The later allowing the shows makers to give it a cheap to produce mockumentry feel as we follow the ongoing lives and relationships of the 4 men and 4 women crew.  Sound dreadful doesn't it!  Which is perhaps why it ran for just 13 episodes before being cancelled.

Moon Zero Two (1969) Movie poster 1

Quite possibly one of the nicest bits of art I've seen done for this film.  Of course it's inaccurate to the films actual content but lovely all the same.  That's the close up detail above, by the way, the full poster is below with text.
