OK, time to clear the files a bit. I've been holding onto these images for years waiting to date them but lets throw it out to you people out there. If you know, or know how I can find out what year these images are from then feel free to pop a comment in below and I'll update accordingly.

Its been suggested that this is the same space helmet as one featured in You Only Live Twice and on study I would have to agree. Its also the same year as that James Bond film and given the smart dressed chap and the girl I'm now wonder if this whole advert is trying to capture the Bond thing, officially or not. ReplyDeleteI'm seeing some of the Shapely Dacron text in Esquire for 1970. The Gemini 4 thruster gun dates this ad to post-1965. (The fashions might date it more closely, if I were a fashion expert, a thing no one has ever accused me of being.) (Even though this is, technically, a fashion blog.)

Also, speaking-- as I was in the comment above-- of Gemini 4 and the Hand-Held Maneuvering Unit brandished by Ed White during America's first spacewalk, I wrote a piece for the Vatican Observatory Foundation a while back: Looking back at Gemini 4, Literally, after Fifty Years. Hope you like it.

DeleteActually, let's be more specific. It looks like the helmets worn by the astronauts at the beginning of the film. The helmets seen later in the film, at Blofeld's volcano hideaway, are very different in design.
DeleteIndeed. I posted on You Only Live Twice all the way back in November 2011 and if you follow the label at the bottom of this post, the particular helmet in question is featured at the bottom. There's also an image of the other suit. Its been a while but if memory serves one is the Americans the other is the Russians.

Its great when someone spots something like the above. 2011 was a long time ago, I should probably go back and upgrade to a better post with bigger better pictures. Interestingly I always assume that if you see the same helmet in two places, its probably in more. Now I'm properly on the look-out !
