Solaris (1968)

Before the two movie versions of Stanislaw Lem's 1961 novel; Solaris, there was a two-part adaption made for Russian TV back in 1968.  It's available online in some of the obvious places and from what I've seen so far - the first half an hour or so - its very good.

Cheers for the point to this DeadSpiderEye, much appreciated.

  1. I watched this last night, and enjoyed it a lot.

The focus is very much on the love affair, and the production itself is quite pedestrian, but TV doesn't have a lot of scope, so I don't think it would be fair to fault the show that much. It feels a lot like a stage play. I quite liked it overall.

They use stock footage of American rockets; a Polaris A-1 pops up twice, and there is a clip from a Gemini Agena mission. I assume that was done because American hardware would be less familiar to the audience.

  2. Holy Crap! Never heard of this version... Idiot me, but I wouldn't have thought to look for another version!

  3. Wow... I have always been a bit frustrated with Tarkovsky's film, but at least it maintained a constant connection to the Ocean and ended with a memorable image which suggested the ending of the novel. But it never seemed to show enough interest in the contact with the alien that stayed with me from the novel.
This version is more explicit in many areas, but that just consists of people talking at greater length... little is either shown or implied. Tarkovsky definitely exceeded this production on all levels.
