Well that was fun wasn’t it and I’m sure there are more yet to come in the next 50 years.  But before ending this most lengthy of posts let's go back and look again at 1977’s The Face of Evil.

Of note is that this seems to be another, if not even the final, appearance of the Pathfinder Helmets.  There has been some modification made to the chin area in the form of its total removal, which might just explain why they were never seen on the show again.  I can’t imagine there was too much structural integrity left in the prop after that.

The 400th Post

Well here we are then with the 400th post on this blog and we're still looking at the cultural history of the Spaceman, the Spacewoman and occasionally the Space-Ape through film, TV, books, comics, toys, adverts and assorted ephemera and all I can really conclude, after all this time, is that there was then and there remains now; a lot of it about.

 

I started this blog back in December 2010 for a number of very good reasons with not one of them being the need to share an obsession.  I'm not obsessed by this stuff, I just find it quite interesting and that still seems to be enough to keep me going as we approach our 4th year.  This blog continues to be viewed by people all over the world with several thousand visitors a month in steadily increasing numbers and for that constant support I thank you all.

 

There's still a handsome stash of images in the files that remain to be blogged and a wealth of new and new-old material yet to be harvested from the imaginarium so it's onwards and upwards we shall go.

 

I know I'd still be blogging even if no one turned up to look but it means the world to me that you all do.

Scott Saunders Patrick Moore (1977 onwards)

Three more covers from the Scott Saunders Space Adventures series by Patrick Moore.  The first was published in 1977  and, for my money, features a fresh faced young chap not totally dissimilar to a certain Luke Skywalker that was making it big around that year.

I don't think either of these first two are artworks by Peter Elson who did the cover for the previously blogged 3rd book in the set. However this one below, book 6, most definitely is.

Now that just has to be pure Elson and rather lovely for it.  What I find interesting about these books is that I was the right age at the right time, and hanging about the right bit of the bookshop back then, and yet I have no memory of these books or their covers despite slapping down a lot of pocket money for similar subject matter......Oh well, Patrick Moore's loss was Terrance Dicks gain.

The Moon Raiders by Patrick Moore (1978) Peter Elson

I had this piece in my files under the heading of Slaves to the Moon but I didn't want to post it until I had a date.  Unless any one knows different I'm going to go with this publication as the first to use it and label it 1978.  It's an absolute gem, is it not.

Below is the back cover and features quite a different looking space chap which may not be by Elson.  Again if anyone knows a bit more I would love to be able to confirm the artist in an update

Benson & Hedges advert (????)

I used to smoke and for the most part I used to smoke B&H.  One day when they make fags that are much cheaper, full of vitamins and less smelly I might start all over again but until such times arrive I'm quite happy to leave them in the past.

 

If anyone know which bit of the past this image is from please let us know.

Space Dust advert (1978)

If I remember rightly this image is from a TV advert for the snapping candy bits that sort of exploded on the tongue!   Helmets made by the man that went on to make the Outland helmets, I think.  Can't remember his name but I believe he also used to make some claim to having built and designed the Star Wars Stormtrooper helmets.  I now expect the comments section to spring into life to fill in the gaps
